Online sources for finding bits and pieces that you need to add that extra detail, or historically-accurate fabric, or entire
costumes. There's a lot of these, so don't spend all your money in one place. Another reason I'm listing these links is
because looking at what is out there for purchase not only gives you an idea of prices and availability for those things you
may not want to construct yourself, but by looking at what others have made or have been able to find and offer for sale,
you can get some aesthetic research done. (Yes, I know how to rationalize almost anything.)
Arms and Armor
Collectible and wearable items.
Art Supplies
Things you need to draw and colour. Plus things that might help you build parts of your costume.
More art supplies!
Asian and Oriental
Fashion, accessories, party supplies, and more.
Specialty wedding supplies, plus information and tips.
Gifts and collectibles - from chopsticks to makeup.
Wide variety of gift items, including fans and carved items.
Books
These would be in addition to the ubiquitous and obvious Amazon.com (I loves me some Amazon.com, don't get me wrong!)....
Advanced Book Exchange - search for a book, get prices from different dealers. Some great prices if you've got the time to
meander through it all.
While they have a line of patterns, they also have books on period authentic embroidery, and hand sewing.
Publishers of entertainment and design books, including fashion and costume. Onsite ordering available.
Crowns and Tiaras
Yes, I know almost all of these sites are all bridal-accoutrement-heavy, however, if one wants a pretty, dainty, and possibly
stunning tiara, apparently bridal sites are the places to look! And, believe me, I've looked. I need a tiara, or a crown.
And possibly a sceptre, but that might have to wait....
Gorgeous tiaras and headpieces. The catalogue seems to be down at the moment, but some images are still available.
Some really unique and lovely tiaras.
Lovely bridal headpieces and jewelry.
"Medieval, Celtic & Period Inspired Circlets & Tiaras" - some nice pieces, also has bridal dress designs.
The tiaras and circlets are really unusual, including one with Celtic motifs.
Nice catalogue of tiaras.
Nice gallery of lovely tiaras. They also do matching jewelry.
The artist is not currently taking new orders, but the galleries are still up. Nicely detailed jewelry and tiaras (of course!),
with good images.
Dancewear
Dance shoes, unitards, leotards, tights and so forth. (Sometimes one needs something like this.)
Designers
Interesting mix of items, with masks, feather-trimmed cloaks, and an entire Mourning section (with Civil War era bonnets).
I love this stuff - romantic, vintage-y items, including an entire line based on Amy Brown's fairy art (that is, copies of
the items Amy Brown's fairies wear). A pirate line is promised.
Bridal gowns based on period costumes. Medieval, Renaissance, Directoire, and more, including early 20th century.
Gothicky clothing for plus sizes - nice line of ready-to-wear, as well as one-of-a-kind items. I think the designs are nice,
but the fabrics are wonderful.
Items based on Celtic and period silhouettes. Not precisely historically accurate, but easy-care.
Incredible gowns, from Lily's black gown in the movie, Legend, to a Cyber Geisha design.
Ball, wedding, and Goth-inspired gowns, based on period designs. Very pretty. (Watch out for the butterfly following your
cursor. Kind of annoying, kind of entertaining.)
Fans
Truly some beautiful fans, from collectibles to wedding accessories, to reasonably priced blanks.
Vintage - while prices may be out of my current budget, this is also a good place to do a little research. There are always
beautiful examples to look at.
Feather fans - pretty period-accurate. Site also has other items with feathers - barrettes, feather and crystal head-pieces
(very pretty), capes, earrings, masks, and more.
Vintage fan dealer, with beautiful images online.
Antique and vintage fans - some pretty reasonable prices, and lovely fans.
Vintage fans. More pretties.
"Fanmaker of Period Folding Fans" - UK site (just so you know), makes and paints fans (reproductions) for theater
and movies, also has fans for rent (or "hire").
Carved and painted fan sticks for lace fans. Located in Dublin, Ireland.
Reproduction Renaissance feather fans. Very pretty.
Oriental fans.
Really stunning, hand-painted fans from Spain.
Wedding, collectible, and "aromatherapy" fans. Not cheap by any means, but has some beautiful fans.
Pretty, pretty, pretty. Not inexpensive.
Feathery
Big, fluffly, ostrich feathers (ostrich only). Plus handbags (I don't get it, but they're pretty anyway) and boas.
Source for peacock feathers.
Many different kinds of feathers, as well as boas, fans, and masks.
Pheasant, chicken plumage, ostrich, peacock - and more feathers.
Feathers and the other feather-based items, of course, but also just about anything else you can do with an ostrich, parts
of an ostrich, or that may look like an ostrich. Very ostrich-centric.
Natural and hand-dyed ostrich feathers. Beautiful colours. And the background on this page is amazing. I just had to mention
that.
More feathers, dyed and undyed, boas, purses (!), capelets, fans, and masks.
Gloves
Pricey (leather), but pretty. Modern and vintage, plus the site carries gauntlets.
Hats
Wool and felt hats for re-enactors, theaters, and costumes. Images in black and white, but they do have a gallery of colour
swatches.
Halloweeny
Your basic sources for bits and pieces, plus somewhere to go if you have to have something fairly quickly and can't be bothered
to make it yourself. Good for basic wigs, which can then be re-invented to suit, plus the other bits and pieces which can
be too much of a pain to construct from scratch.
Costumes for people and some for pets, plus collectible items.
This site seems to have pretty good prices, a nice selection of period wigs, and some of those Goth-y Halloween costumes at
slightly more reasonable prices than your local Halloween-only store.
Wide range of wigs, as well as the other costume stuff.
Large selection of costumes and costume accessories, up to and including temporary hair colouring.
Bunches o' costumes. I originally bookmarked this site because they carry epaulettes, which are important.
Rental and retail costumes. Online catalogue is basically text links to images, so a little counter-intuitive, but it does
load quickly.
Actual storefront located in New York, online store carries a variety of items from cloaks to couples costumes. Also has
epaulettes.
UK site, with mostly accessory-type items. From belts and braces to shoes, and includes items for storage and moving costumes.
Wide range of masks and costumes, and costume accessories.
Jewelry
Signet rings and jewelry, plus coronets and crowns.
Beautiful Goth and bellydance jewelry (plus some punk stuff!), as well as Renaissance/fantasy chain mail (head-pieces, slave-bracelets
and so on).
Makeup
Comprehensive online catalogue - includes special effects and theatrical makeup.
