One of my favourite aesthetics, the Venetian Carnivale has produced (and still produces) such a range of wonderful costumes
and masks (so Freudian, too!) that it takes my breath away. To start with, here are some links to sites that I find inspirational
and informative.
Overview of traditions and history, with brief descriptions of recurring characters and themes. Larger site includes international
versions of Carnival, including Rio de Janeiro. Some good, period, images.
Brilliant photos of costumes and masks. A whole bunch. Larger site is an extensive collection of travel photography.
Tourist guide, and calender of events during Carnival.
Part of Venice promotion site, first page is the briefly told story of Carnivale; two galleries on other pages, plus video.
Beautiful photos, with great details.
A dozen photos, lovely in detail and colour (compressed images in sepia link to full-sized pictures).
Extensive galleries of photos, and includes some history. Part of a Venice tourist promotion site.
Venetian Masqued Ball at the Palazzo Contarini. Pictures of previous balls, colourful and vivid. Also, I wanna go to one.
Masks
Online store carrying a vast range of masks - naturally including Carnival and Mardi Gras masks, also carrying collectible
ceramic masks. Great images and inspiration.
Gorgeous fantasy masks, done in leather. Faery, woods-folk, feathered creatures, they're all incredible. The site design
is one of the best I've ever seen, and it's remained the same for several years (I know!). Very, very, pretty.
Website for a storefront (located in Venice), they do sell online. Browse through their catalogue galleries for more ideas
and inspiration.
I can't say enough about this artist - fantastic masks! Online galleries of past work and customers. Truly imaginative and
unique. Props, accessories and sculpture images are included.
Feather masks (and other feathered accessories) for sale, but the best reason to browse is for ideas.
Carnival and masquerade masks at online store - French and Italian traditional. Simply gorgeous, and superb for getting ideas.
Venice, Italy - amazing masks. Really. Also includes brief description of the artist's methods, short history, and overviews
of some international mask types.
Superlative masquerade masks. (I'm running out of adjectives!)
Handcrafted masks and feather boas. Price points vary from reasonable to expensive. Nice detail and online catalogue.
Links to mask-specific sites - maskmaking, techniques, purveyors, and some international examples.
Stunning masks by Italian artisans, site includes a brief slide-show on the process of mask-making. Prices seem pretty reasonable
for some of the carnival masks (even given my bad attempt at converting euros to American dollars).
