Search museum collections and exhibits for extant examples of historical clothing. Great resource for getting the detail right.

Alfred Station, New York - "By Appointment" collection, with online examples of clothing items, as well as textiles. Beautiful photography, clear and crisp, so one can see details. Although a site promoting a visit to this collection, it is well worth a visit-by-desktop.
Located in Lowell, Massachusetts, this museum has some online exhibits (fairly limited) of American historical textiles, as well as examples of other textiles. Not only the fabrics themselves, but how they were made and the equipment to make them. Plus, other interesting and useful information about manufacture and composition.
Hartfort, Connecticut - small online costume and textile collection, good pictures and fairly detailed information.
Darien, Connecticut - online costume exhibits, with nice detail and information.
A fascinating site, containing information and pictures of clothing items that have been concealed within houses for incredible amounts of time. One can browse or search.
Erte museum, in conjunction with an art gallery and NYMUSEUM.com - images of sculpture, fashion and costume design, maquettes, stage design, plus online store.
Berlin, Germany - historical museum with limited online pictures, including textiles/costume.
Links to and information on Hampshire County (Britain) museums.
Two pairs of ladies shoes are on-site. There is a household inventory as well as other museum-ish things.
"A Dance of Light and Color" exhibit - beautiful, detailed photos of Indian costume online.
